New Delhi: RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav expressed deep sorrow and paid tribute to former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren, who passed away on Monday morning in a Delhi hospital after a prolonged illness. “Today, Shibu Soren passed away. He was a great leader of Dalits and Adivasis. It is a matter of deep sorrow, and we pay our heartfelt tribute to him,” said Lalu Yadav. Shibu Soren, the towering tribal leader and father of current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi at 8.56 a.m., according to a statement issued by the hospital. “He died after a prolonged illness. He was suffering from a kidney ailment and had also suffered a stroke a month and a half ago. He had been on life support for the past month,” the hospital said. Soren was under the care of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Chairman of Nephrology, and a team from the neurology and ICU departments. Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village, then in Bihar (now in Jharkhand), Shibu Soren belonged to the Santhal tribal community. A lifelong advocate for tribal rights, he began his activism at the age of 18 by founding the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh, which focused on land and tribal issues. In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) along with A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato, leading the charge for a separate Jharkhand state and the empowerment of tribal communities. He served as the General Secretary of the JMM and played a pivotal role in the movement that eventually led to the formation of Jharkhand in 2000. Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times. Though his tenures were short due to coalition complexities, his impact on state politics and tribal advocacy was long-lasting. Known affectionately as “Dishom Guru”, Shibu Soren was revered in tribal regions for his commitment to justice and upliftment of marginalised communities. His passing marks the end of an era in Jharkhand’s politics. Ranchi: Top brass of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Monday met its legislators, parliamentarians from the state along with senior leaders and office bearers from the party’s state unit in New Delhi on Monday to review developments in the party as well as in the JMM led coalition govt, of which it is a part. The meeting comes at a time when a few MLAs began to openly criticise some of the ministers, who are part of the cabinet of chief minister Hemant Soren, and accused them of sidelining and ignoring party workers and voice from the grassroot. Few days back, Khijri MLA and deputy leader of Congress legislative party, in the state assembly, Rajesh Kachchap openly criticised the functioning of state health minister Irfan Ansari, who is the party’s MLA from Jamtara. Monday’s meeting lasted for close to two hours from evening at the AICC headquarters in presence of national president Mallikarjun Kharge, and leader of opposition in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi. All 16 MLAs, two MPs and senior party officer bearers attended the meeting. State party president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, after the meeting said that the meeting remained positive and national leadership was apprised of host of works undertaken to strengthen the party at the grassroots. Mahto said, “Party’s Jharkhand affair’s in-charge gave a detailed presentation on the various works which we have initiated as part of Sangathan Srijan programme. It was appreciated by Kharge ji and Rahul ji.” He also added that stress was laid on fulfilling party’s manifesto (seven guarantees) which was promised during 2024 assembly polls. “Since we are also part of the govt, we must work in tandem with our alliance partners to ensure that the promises are fulfilled. For, Congress, issues such as implementation of PESA rules, Sarna code, working for upliftment of OBC community are a few key priorities. Leadership has instructed to work towards it,” he said. Cong tribal leaders meet Rahul in Delhi

Ranchi: Cong leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday met with tribal leaders of several states, including Jharkhand, in Delhi to take stock of the issues and concerns of the adivasi population. From Jharkhand, over a dozen tribal workers of the party, including Lohardaga MP Sukhdeo Bhagat, state agriculture minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey, attended the meeting. The party’s spokesperson Satish Paul Munjini said that the meeting was aimed at preparing action plans to work for the welfare of adivasi communities. About Jharkhand, he said that the representatives detailed about the ongoing works of the alliance govt and existing issues. “The biggest demand for tribals is the implementation of Sarna Code ahead of the nationwide caste and population census. It was also discussed how previous BJP govt had conspired to evict the tribals from their lands in the guise of land banks and digitization. We will soon launch a campaign to address these issues,” he said, adding that Rahul Gandhi has assured his full support to take up the concerns at the national level to force union govt to act accordingly. Transgender community, activists demand space for talks, acceptance, & infrastructure

Ranchi: A pride month sensitisation programme was held on Saturday bringing together transgender individuals, mental health professionals, civil society organisations, and govt representatives. The event was organised by the Child in Need Institute (CINI) under its G-SAFE+ initiative, in collaboration with RINPAS and other community stakeholders. The aim of the event was to create a space for dialogue on the legal, psychological, and infrastructural needs of the transgender community while celebrating their identity and resilience. Citing the poor implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment that mandated transgender welfare boards in every state, Jharkhand high court Ritwik Sinha said, “We are talking about rights, but they remain largely on paper. There is zero follow-up.” Mental health emerged as a key focus, with statistics revealing that mental health issues are four times more prevalent among transgender individuals. Dr Manisha Kiran, the HOD of Psychiatric and Social Work at RINPAS, attributed high school dropout rates to bullying and lack of support. Discrimination, emotional negligence, minority stress and rejection, verbal and sometimes physical abuse, along with stigma, push the trans community into anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse. “The govt should actively involve members of the transgender community in lawmaking for the community and needs to invest in research in this area, as the lack of data in the region hinders effective policy making,” said S J Sangeeta of CINI. Amarjeet Shergil of Utthaan CBO, a group led by LGBTQIA+ members from Jamshedpur, lamented the lack of basic facilities in Ranchi for transgender community. “Jamshedpur and Chaibasa have separate washrooms, but Ranchi doesn’t. We’re seen as provocateurs — people murder, rape, and abuse us, but no police reports are filed,” she said, calling for dedicated transgender cells in police stations. Dalit woman judge sought leave, Jharkhand High Court made ‘adverse remarks’ in ACR — Supreme Court issued notice!

Allegation of adverse remarks being recorded after filing a petition in the Supreme Court against denial of child care leave. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Jharkhand High Court. This notice has been issued on the latest application filed by a Dalit woman judge, in which she has alleged that adverse remarks were made in her Annual Confidential Report (ACR) after filing a petition in the apex court against not getting childcare leave. A bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan recorded the argument of senior advocate A.K. Sinha, who appeared on behalf of the Jharkhand High Court. He told the court that as per the suggestion given by the Supreme Court on June 6, the High Court has now decided to grant 92 days of childcare leave to the woman judge. However, the counsel appearing for the judge raised serious concerns before the bench and said that the adverse remarks were made in the ACR only after the petition was filed on May 23. The judge’s counsel said, “One more thing is very disturbing. Some remarks have been made in my ACR now, which have been made after the filing of this petition. I am an officer from the Scheduled Caste category and I have disposed of a large number of cases.” He also said that the judge concerned is “one of the best performing officers.” The counsel questioned the timing of the ACR remarks and said, “Please look at the timing…” To this, the Supreme Court directed the Jharkhand High Court administration to file a reply to the allegations levelled by the judge that adverse remarks were made in his ACR after the petition was filed. Rahul moves HC to challenge order for personal appearance before Chaibasa court

Ranchi: The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, moved the Jharkhand high court on Monday to challenge an order passed by the special MP/MLA court in Chaibasa which asked his personal appearance in a defamation case. Gandhi was ordered to appear in person before the court on June 26 in connection with the case filed by petitioner Pratap Kumar. Kumar said Gandhi’s statement against BJP leaders, particularly Union home minister Amit Shah, at a political rally in Chaibasa in 2018 was derogatory. Challenging the lower court’s order, Gandhi said he has already moved a petition seeking exemption from appearance before the Chaibasa court at this stage of the case. The petition is also pending before the high court for adjudication, Gandhi’s petition said. The lower court at Chaibasa was informed about the pending petition before the high court, stating that it not been decided on merits. Despite this fact, the lower court refused to grant reprieve to Gandhi and ordered him to appear in person. In his political speech during the last election campaign, Gandhi reportedly referred to Shah as a “murderer”. Gandhi’s statements were defamatory and made purposely to malign the image of Shah, Pratap Kumar said in his petition before the Chaibasa court. Hemant govt must take initiative for OBC reservations in edu institutions: Cong

Jamshedpur: The ruling alliance party, Congress, has appealed to the Hemant Soren govt to take the initiative for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations in educational institutions across the state. Making the appeal, state Congress in-charge Koppula Raju said Article 15 (5) of the Constitution allows the state to make provisions for the betterment of socially and economically backward classes, concerning their admission to educational institutions. While speaking at the Samvidhan Bachao Rally at Sakchi on Sunday, the Congress leader said the state govt must take the initiative without any delay. Raju also said party leader Rahul Gandhi played a pivotal role in driving the Narendra Modi govt at the Centre to give its nod for the caste census. “From the streets to Parliament, Rahul Gandhi fought for the rights of the OBC community which forced the Modi government to bow before the legitimate demand and agree to a census of the backward classes,” Raju said, addressing the crowd at the Sakchi parking zone. Stating that protecting the Constitution is the responsibility of all Indians, Raju further said, “Congress has taken the lead but it is the responsibility of all citizens to participate in the campaign to uphold the democratic values, principles and constitutional provisions.” During the rally, the party passed a resolution praising the armed forces for their commendable feat in ‘Operation Sindoor’. The bravery and courage demonstrated by the soldiers ensured a strong military response to Pakistan, he added. Speaking on the occasion, state Congress president, Keshav Mahato Kamlesh, said the Modi govt failed to align with the spirit of the Constitution, claiming that it was grossly undermined by the Centre with its activities in the last 11 years. The rally was necessitated to make the common people know how the Modi govt is violating the Constitution, Kamlesh said. Top party leaders of the state attended the rally organised by the East Singhbhum district Congress committee.
