‘Lot of talk about one company’: Centre tells satcom firms to meet security norms amid Musk’s Starlink row

NEW DELHI: Communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday said satellite communication (satcom) companies can begin operations in India only after individually meeting the required security conditions and milestones, stressing that three companies have received licences despite the focus on Elon Musk’s Starlink. He also took a dig at Congress for their response to Musk’s statements. “There is a lot of conversation about one specific company, but three companies have got satcom licences,” Scindia said, underlining that each operator must fulfil the required conditions before it can start services. Scindia’s remarks come amid a row between Musk and the Indian government over the delay in Starlink’s commercial launch in the country. The SpaceX chief had alleged that “certain oligarchs” were blocking the company to protect their “monopolistic chokehold” on the Indian market, without initially naming anyone. The government rejected the allegation, describing India’s regulatory framework for satellite communication services as “fair and non-discriminatory”. It said security assessments were underway for all three licensed operators and that each could move to the next stage of seeking spectrum assignment once the process was completed. The government called suggestions of discriminatory treatment “baseless and misconceived”. Minister of state for communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said the security clearance issue was pending with the ministry of home affairs and had “nothing to do with one company”. Scindia also took a swipe at Congress saying that the party had earlier objected to a particular person getting a licence but was now aligned with the same person in questioning why the licence had not been granted. He accused the party of not knowing whether it was “going left or right”. The remarks come after Musk stepped up his criticism on Thursday, saying Starlink was licensed in more than 165 countries and had spent five years complying with Indian government requirements. He questioned why the company was still awaiting approval and asked whether industrialist Mukesh Ambani was the “real boss of India”. Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi responded to Musk on X, writing: “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy.” Musk replied: “Thank you, Rahul. This is indeed troubling.” Courtesy : TOI Note: This news is originally published on https:/timesofindia.com/bha and is used purely for non-profit/non-commercial purposes, especially human rights

Tamil Nadu Congress condemns Rahul Gandhi’s arrest, demands removal of CEC

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Thursday held a protest in Chennai condemning the arrest of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and INDIA bloc MPs for organising an agitation demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Congress said INDIA bloc would organise protest meetings across Tamil Nadu on Oct 13 and 14 against the CEC. At the protest on Anna Salai in Chennai, TNCC functionaries raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, accusing BJP-led Union govt of using force to suppress the Opposition. Congress functionaries burnt an effigy and posters carrying images of Modi, Shah and Kumar, causing temporary traffic congestion in the area. The protesters demanded Kumar’s immediate removal, alleging the deletion of 13 crore names from the electoral rolls through SIR across the country was an “unlawful act.” Former TNCC president Thirunavukkarasar said Congress and its allies would continue their agitation until Kumar was removed or resigned. He said Opposition parties were considering measures like approaching Supreme Court seeking Kumar’s removal and moving a resolution in the parliament in this regard when the parliament meets. “Congress will not rest until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from office. Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that the agitation will continue until he is removed,” Thirunavukkarasar said. Jaggareddy, Nirmala Begin Indefinite Fast in Sangareddy Supporting Rahul Gandhi’s Protest

Hyderabad: Extending support of the movement launched by Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and also to protect the voting rights and democratic rights of the people, TPCC working president T. Jaggareddy and his wife Nirmala Jaggareddy began a solidarity fast at the Ambedkar statue near the Old Bus Stand in Sangareddy. The protest, joined by Congress leaders and party workers, commenced at 10 PM on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering, Jaggareddy alleged that the BJP had attempted to manipulate the electoral system in states where it sought to strengthen its position and gain power. He said that the BJP had come to power at the Centre three times with the cooperation of the election commission and Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly raised concerns about the issue. “This is not merely a political struggle of the Congress party. It is a battle to safeguard the voting rights of the people of India. Rahul Gandhi is fighting on the streets to protect the democratic rights of citizens,” Jaggareddy said. He further alleged that the ECI was acting arbitrarily in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and stated that it was accountable to the people regarding controversies surrounding voter lists. Referring to allegations made by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, he said attempts were being made to undermine citizens’ voting rights. Jaggareddy announced his full support for Rahul Gandhi’s agitation demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. He also condemned the police action in Delhi, where Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and other opposition leaders were reportedly stopped and detained. “As long as Rahul Gandhi’s struggle continues, our fast in Sangareddy will also continue. We will persist in our fight supporting the demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation,” he asserted. Jaggareddy also stated that the Nehru-Gandhi family had historically played an important role in protecting democratic institutions in the country. He recalled the sacrifices of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, and highlighted the long public service of Sonia Gandhi. “Rahul Gandhi comes from a family with a history of sacrifice and is now fighting for the voting rights of the people. Citizens across the country should voluntarily extend their support to this cause,” he appealed. Along with Nirmala Jaggareddy, Congress leaders, elected representatives, and party workers participated in the fast, expressing solidarity with the movement spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi’s style has changed: In a closed room, he ordered party leaders to think outside the box; Congress is in for more surprises!

Political analysts believe that Rahul Gandhi’s political style has changed. He is surprising everyone on the political stage. Congress may take even more surprising steps in the future. Rahul Gandhi has advised party leaders to work on new ideas. New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s style has changed. Now he is surprising his opponents, surprising them on the political stage with unexpected moves. This is becoming visible on the streets of Delhi. This is the result of his strategy. He has also told party leaders to abandon old methods and do something that surprises everyone, attracts people’s attention, and becomes the topic of discussion during street protests. Rahul Gandhi gave the idea to the leaders in a closed-door meeting Some Congress leaders say that Rahul Gandhi conveyed this message in a closed-door meeting with party officials at the party headquarters on Monday. The very next day, he was seen climbing a police barricade, waving the tricolor, and sitting on a sit-in with his sister Priyanka Gandhi, which was followed by a protest from Janpath to Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. Some party officials are viewing Rahul Gandhi’s remarks not only in the context of the ongoing conflict between the government and the opposition, but also in the backdrop of the “Cockroach Janata Party” launching a second round of protests on the same issues. Previously, their protests over the paper leak issue had made headlines. Emphasis on Strategic Shift in Protest Methods While talking about strategic shifts in protest methods to make a greater impact on social media, Rahul Gandhi also cited an example at a meeting of AICC and PCC officials on October 5th. The meeting was called to plan the party’s upcoming campaigns/protests. He said that one method that had a truly shocking impact was the shirtless protest by a group of Youth Congress workers during the AI Summit at Bharat Mandapam in February last year. A party official quoted Gandhi at the meeting as saying, “That day, people only discussed how the Youth Congress carried out the protest, not the discussions at the AI conference.” Gen Z, Congress Focus on Youth Rahul Gandhi’s student engagement campaign, Chhatra Ki Goonj, features surprising elements. These include a ramp-like stage, Rahul Gandhi deliberately walking on it while speaking, organizers welcoming him with a shower of confetti, or colored pieces of paper, and a selfie session at the end. All of these are intended to resonate with and attract Gen Z audiences. Ideas for a unique and surprising protest According to sources, when the meeting discussed the MPs’ march in New Delhi and the Congress’s block-level demonstrations and village-level outreach programs, Rahul Gandhi believed that while these programs were fine, they were common and conventional. Rahul Gandhi stressed the need to think about ideas for different and surprising protests. Inspired by this, many enthusiastically supported Rahul Gandhi’s position. Some pointed out the powerful and surprising impact of Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in protest near the Prime Minister’s residence in July. Others emphasized how the sit-in by Rahul, Priyanka, and others at the Parliament Street police station in August went viral. Congress is about to take more surprising steps! Having understood their leader’s thinking and witnessed Rahul Gandhi climbing the barricades, Priyanka Gandhi jumping over the gate, and their sit-ins at Akashvani Bhavan on Tuesday and Janpath-Jantar Mantar on Wednesday, many Congress leaders are now expecting more surprise moves. This could pressure party officials to organize similar events. Reported by: CL Manoj•Edited by: Varun Shailesh Courtesy: Hindi News

Rupee may be undervalued, markets can be irrational: RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra

MUMBAI: Reserve Bank of India governor Sanjay Malhotra said the rupee was undervalued and the central bank would intervene to ensure orderly movement in the currency market even as it closed at 96.78 on Wednesday, down 36 paise from its previous close, after falling to a five-month low of 96.85 during the day. “By a number of estimates, including the real effective exchange rate, the rupee is not overvalued. It may be undervalued,” Malhotra said at a press conference after the MPC meeting. He was responding to a question on whether the rupee market was irrational. “Markets can be quite irrational in the short run. It’s only in the long run that they are able to find the right value,” he said. Rupee falls to 96.85 against Dollar hitting five-month low The governor said RBI would support the rupee’s orderly movement and help it find its “correct value”, while ensuring there was no excessive volatility. Malhotra also said a correction in the valuation of global AI stocks could redirect foreign capital to emerging markets such as India. He said a correction in AI stocks would not have a major negative impact on India and “if at all, there may be” a positive impact. Malhotra said that US tariffs and the absence of a trade deal would be a negative but could be offset by a trade deal with other countries. Despite a robust services trade surplus and strong net remittance receipts, the current account deficit widened in July because of a higher merchandise trade deficit, Malhotra said. The merchandise trade deficit rose to $58.7 billion in July and Aug from $55.1 billion in the same period a year earlier, mainly because of higher imports of electronic goods and crude oil. On external financing, Malhotra said net FDI had shown sustained improvement, with inflows rising to $13.8 billion in the first four months of the year from $9.6 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier. The increase was driven by higher gross inflows and a slowdown in the growth of outward FDI. “Robust gross FDI reflects the strong interest of global investors in India,” he said. FPI recorded net outflows of $10.3 billion during the period up to Oct 5. However, capital-flow measures announced in the June policy had supported inflows, he said. The balance of payments is consequently expected to record a healthy surplus this year. Malhotra also clarified that the new trade rules are aimed at improving ease of business and do not impose a reporting burden on individuals who get paid from overseas for software or other services. Nor does it apply to individuals paying for software or some subscriptions. Small exporters can use a self-declaration for bills up to Rs 10 lakh; and banks, not exporters or importers, handle reporting on the RBI’s system. The aim is to simplify trade procedures while improving RBI’s data on services exports, he said. Sensex snaps winning run After a two-session gain, sensex slid on Wednesday after RBI hiked interest rates for the first time in over three-and-a-half years. Sensex closed 429 points down at 72,639 points while on NSE, Nifty closed 173 points down at 22,603 points. On BSE, two indices-PSU banks and housing finance-each closed nearly 1% up while two other indices-bankex and financial services-closed barely changed. ‘Where were 300 MPs? Rahul Gandhi is doing theatrics’: BJP hits back at Congress over EC protest

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi cites the Election Commission’s latest press release, claiming that no formal request from Congress or its delegation to meet the poll panel had been received LoP in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi being detained by police personnel after over eight-hour sit-in inside Akashvani Bhawan premises for not being allowed to march towards the Election Commission’s office, during a protest march against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, in New Delhi. (AICC via PTI Photo) BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the opposition party’s protest at the Election Commission office accusing it of creating a “theatrics” after the poll panel issued a statement clarifying its position on the proposed meeting. Trivedi cited the Election Commission’s latest press release, claiming that no formal request from Congress or its delegation to meet the poll panel had been received. He said the ECI learnt around 4 pm through the Delhi Police DCP that Gandhi wanted to meet its officials. “Rahul Gandhi asked for time, and when time was given, he did not go,” Trivedi said, adding that the Commission had offered to meet Congress representatives and had also offered to send a senior official to receive their memorandum. He questioned the Congress’ claim that around 300 MPs were part of the protest. Related news: After 8-hour standoff, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka detained from Akashvani Bhawan “Where were the 300 MPs?” Trivedi asked, arguing that the numbers visible at the protest did not match the Congress’s claim. He also questioned why senior Congress lawyers and leaders were not part of the delegation. The BJP further attacked the Congress over its reported attempt to seek a meeting with the Election Commission at Parliament, arguing that constitutional authorities cannot simply be “summoned” by Parliament or political parties. The ruling party also criticised Congress protesters for entering the Akashvani premises, asking why they did so if their objective was merely to stage a demonstration. Taking a swipe at Gandhi’s repeated political setbacks, Trivedi compared the Congress leader’s attempts to relaunch himself to satellite launch vehicles. “The Congress should now be called FSLV-Failed Satellite Launch Vehicle,” he said. Trivedi, addressing the press conference at party headquarters alleged that the Congress was trying to manufacture a confrontation with constitutional institutions after failing to substantiate its allegations against them, accusing the party of being “frustrated” and rejected by voters. After Delhi and Mumbai, Bengaluru to protest against SIR on Thursday – all you need to know

NEW DELHI: After massive protests in Delhi and Mumbai over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, civil society groups in Karnataka are set to hold a “People’s Tribunal” in Bengaluru on October 8 to document concerns over voter deletions and alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Unlike a conventional political rally, the People’s Tribunal is expected to provide a public platform for people affected by the SIR exercise to share their experiences at Freedom Park. The Bengaluru event will focus in particular on voters categorised under the Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate and Others (ASDDO) categories. The tribunal comes amid growing concerns over the SIR process. The event has also drawn support from actor Prakash Raj. In a social media post, Raj said, “People’s Tribunal by Cockroaches..Dipke.Ashuthosh.. Sourav and all the youth organisations and the civil society.. The victims of SIR from across the state will be present.” People’s Tribunal by Cockroaches..Dipke.Ashuthosh.. Sourav and all the youth organisations and the civil society.. Rajya Sabha list: A message to the upper castes, as well as the backward and Dalit communities, an attempt to address not just one but both elections.

BJP Rajya Sabha list in UP: The BJP on Monday released a list of eight Rajya Sabha candidates in Uttar Pradesh. In this list, the BJP has relied on cadre rather than any outside leaders. With the announcement of eight candidates for the ten Rajya Sabha seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party has not only addressed the Upper House’s arithmetic, but also sought to send a political message for the 2027 Assembly elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. By prioritizing long-time and loyal workers in the list, the party has assured the core cadre that long-term commitment and loyalty will be respected within the organization. It has also attempted to contain the resentment among the upper castes and to keep the backward and Dalit communities firmly connected. The party did not give a second chance to any of the current eight Rajya Sabha members. Influential figures from Western Uttar Pradesh, such as Union Minister BL Verma and former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh, were also excluded from the list. On the contrary, by sending Cabinet Minister Dharampal to the Rajya Sabha, the party has signaled the creation of a new axis of backward leadership in Western Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, the selection of Shruti, the daughter of a prominent Kurmi leader from Rohilkhand and Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, has raised a new question about the BJP’s balance between nepotism and organizational loyalty. This list is also significant because the BJP is in a crucial phase of preparing for the 2027 assembly elections. At this time, selecting candidates for the Rajya Sabha is not merely a means of sending them to Delhi, but also a means of sending messages to different social groups, regions, and organizational factions. For some time now, there have been discussions about the political distance and dominance between BL Verma and Rajveer Singh regarding the leadership of the Lodhi community in Western Uttar Pradesh. BL Verma was once close to Kalyan Singh, while Rajveer Singh is considered a natural successor to his father’s political legacy. The exclusion of both from the Rajya Sabha list cannot be a normal occurrence. In contrast, the decision to send Livestock Minister Dharampal, a multiple-time MLA from Amla, to the Rajya Sabha is being seen as a strategy to promote a new leadership face among the Lodhi voters of western Uttar Pradesh. A Message to the New Through Old Faces Most of the eight names are those whose political identity has been built within the BJP organization. Among these, Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Katiyar can be considered relatively new faces. Meanwhile, through names like Gopikrishna Pandey, Radhakant Ojha, Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, and Rampratap Singh, the party has signaled to its old cadre that the path to the Upper House is open to those who have worked for the organization for a long time. Social alignment is also part of this strategy. By including three upper caste, three backward caste, and two Dalit candidates, the BJP has not only targeted its traditional upper caste base but also sent a message of representation to OBC and Dalit voters. Shruti’s selection, being the daughter of Santosh Gangwar, the Governor of Jharkhand and a multiple-time MP from Bareilly, again brings to the fore the question of nepotism within the BJP. The BJP has long leveled this accusation against opposition parties. In such a situation, the decision to send Shruti, who comes from a political family, to the Rajya Sabha despite her organizational background raises questions about the party’s standards. However, it is also being seen as an attempt to appease the Kurmi community in western Uttar Pradesh. While the regional balance in the Rajya Sabha list may not appear completely equal, the social and organizational message is more clear. While the BJP has sought to mitigate potential resentment among the upper castes, it has also attempted to reassure the backward castes and Dalits that their representation is secure. The biggest message is that the party may prioritize leadership preferences and electoral expediency over factional pressure or political legacy within the organization.
