Kerala govt says Nipah, Shigella situation under control; Vijayan questions outbreak management

Kerala health minister K Muraleedharan on Sunday sought to reassure the public over concerns surrounding Nipah virus and Shigella infections, stating that both situations are being closely monitored and remain under control. Addressing reporters, the minister said one patient suspected of having Nipah virus remains on ventilator support, but extensive testing has so far not indicated a wider outbreak. On Shigella infections, the minister said 135 cases have been reported in the state so far. Three deaths linked to the infection — involving two children and a 59-year-old woman — have also been recorded. However, he stressed that the situation is under constant monitoring and that all necessary medical protocols are being followed. Opposition raises concerns The government’s handling of disease control efforts came under criticism from Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan, who compared the current response with the approach adopted during previous Nipah outbreaks under the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Vijayan said that during earlier outbreaks, the then health minister remained stationed in affected areas and personally coordinated containment activities. “”Replacing the person at the helm of the department at such a stage is not something that would normally be expected. But the Health Minister says that the transfer was made because of non-cooperation with the system. A system relating to transfers within the department has been functioning transparently,” Vijayan stated. DHS transfer sparks political debate Vijayan further questioned the government’s decision to transfer the Director of Health Services (DHS) during an ongoing public health challenge. “My understanding is that the DHS was transferred because he did not support the UDF government’s attempt to dismantle that system”, said Vijayan. He argued that replacing a senior official at a critical stage of outbreak management was unusual and could affect continuity in response efforts. Battle of real ‘TMC’ begins as rebel MPs merge with Nationalist Citizens Party

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: The internal crisis in the Trinamool Congress appeared to intensify on Sunday after a group of dissident MPs claimed they had broken away from the party and announced their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party. The rebel MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and sought recognition as a separate group in Parliament. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that two-thirds of the TMC’s Lok Sabha members had backed the move. “Two-thirds MPs of TMC have given a letter to the Speaker for a separate seating arrangement. We will merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party and support the NDA,” she said. Senior TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said the dissident group had already merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party, describing it as a regional party. The Nationalist Citizens Party is a lesser-known registered, unrecognised party from Tripura. The ‘real party disputes’ The move has triggered a fresh political battle over who represents the “real TMC”. Asked about the claim by the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, Bandyopadhyay said the matter would ultimately be decided by courts. “Court will decide later who is the real TMC. We met the Speaker and gave him our request,” he said. He added that the faction would also stake claim to the party’s electoral symbol of two flowers. Meanwhile, TMC leaders Kirti Azad and Sagarika Ghosh met Speaker Birla and submitted a letter from TMC Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee, urging him not to recognise any separate faction. The letter, dated June 10 and earlier sent through email, argued that the Constitution does not allow the creation of a separate group within an existing political party. It also said the anti-defection law does not permit such a split. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal criticised the rebel MPs and called for their disqualification, arguing that they cannot merge with another party. Sibal said in a post on X, “TMC rebels: Will merge with Nationalist Citizens Party (NCP). Indian democracy has become the ‘theatre of the absurd’. A joke!” “The rebels of the TMC legislative party cannot merge with a political party; that can happen only if the TMC wished to do so!” he added. “Disqualify them!” he said. The earlier cases Shiv Sena split (2022-23): After the split between the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions, the Election Commission recognised the Shinde faction as the Shiv Sena and allowed it to retain the party’s “bow and arrow” symbol. Nationalist Congress Party split (2023-24): After Ajit Pawar’s rebellion, the Election Commission recognised the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP and allotted it the party’s “clock” symbol. AIADMK dispute (2017): After the split between the factions led by Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam, the Election Commission decided that the Palaniswami faction was entitled to the AIADMK name and the “two leaves” symbol. Samajwadi Party dispute (2017): During the fight between Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav factions, the Election Commission recognised Akhilesh Yadav’s faction as the Samajwadi Party and allowed it to retain the “cycle” symbol. How are ‘real party’ disputes decided? The Election Commission decides disputes over a party’s name and election symbol by examining the claims of rival factions. In earlier cases, the poll panel has looked at factors including the support enjoyed by each faction among elected representatives and the party organisation before deciding which group can use the original party name and symbol. The EC’s decisions can later be challenged in courts. ‘INDIA bloc has already won 2029 elections’: Rahul Gandhi lays out strategy of ‘resistance with unity’

Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asserted that the INDIA bloc has effectively “already won” the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, while stressing that opposition parties must remain united to counter the BJP. Sharing a Hindi version of his speech delivered at the INDIA bloc meeting on June 8, Gandhi said unity and resistance were essential at a time when the country’s institutions and democratic values were under strain. ‘We did not lose 2024’ In a post on X, Gandhi said, “I am saying it again… We did not lose the 2024 elections, and we have already won the 2029 elections.” He maintained that the opposition would continue to organise people and collectively challenge what he described as the BJP’s takeover of institutions. “When India’s thinking, the soul of the country, is in crisis… when there is a takeover of institutions… when the voice of the people is suppressed… then only resistance with unity works,” he wrote. ‘Will defeat BJP’ Gandhi further expressed confidence that all INDIA bloc constituents would remain committed to defending the idea of India. “We will remain united, organize every individual, and defeat the BJP’s takeover of India’s institutions with the power of resistance.” In the meeting held on Monday, Rahul Gandhi gave a call to the opposition leaders to stay united, saying it is easy to beat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) “if we stand together and resist”. He also expressed disappointment over the lack of support from some partners on issues such as alleged “vote chori”. Dravida Munnetra Kazahagam (DMK) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) refrained from joining the meeting. Congress to hold student outreach events against paper leaks, exam irregularities: KC Venugopal

Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said the programme aims to highlight concerns over paper leaks, examination scandals, rising costs of competitive tests and the Centre’s failure to protect the interests of students and job seekers. NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday announced a nationwide outreach campaign targeting students and young job aspirants, with a series of conventions focused on paper leaks, examination reforms, unemployment and accountability for recurring irregularities in recruitment and entrance tests. The campaign, to be led by Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, will begin with a student convention in Kota on June 17 and continue in Prayagraj on July 10, Patna on July 11 and Delhi on July 14. Launching the first phase of the initiative, Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said the programme aims to highlight concerns over paper leaks, examination scandals, rising costs of competitive tests and what the party described as the Centre’s failure to protect the interests of students and job seekers. In a statement, Venugopal said the campaign would bring together students, competitive examination aspirants, youth organisations and educators affected by examination-related controversies. He alleged that repeated paper leaks, increasing examination fees and the absence of a transparent recruitment and education system were undermining the future prospects of millions of young Indians. The outreach will also seek to build support for a set of reforms previously advocated by Mr. Gandhi, including the decentralisation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the abolition of examination fees, strict action against those involved in paper leak rackets and greater accountability within the government for examination-related failures. Reiterating the party’s demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Congress said accountability must be fixed for repeated controversies surrounding examinations and recruitment processes. “The Congress Party will seek a comprehensive discussion in Parliament on the crisis confronting India’s youth and push for legislative measures to safeguard their interests, rights and future,” Venugopal said. The party plans to mobilise students through the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the Indian Youth Congress and its state and district units. The campaign will include campus visits, interactions at coaching centres, schools and universities, social media outreach, live screenings and direct engagement with students across the country. According to the Congress, the movement aims to bring together students beyond political affiliations and provide a platform for those affected by examination irregularities to share their experiences and demand corrective action. The party said Rahul Gandhi has consistently raised concerns over paper leaks, recruitment delays and unemployment, making issues of merit, fairness and equal opportunity central to his engagement with India’s youth. ‘It’s easy to defeat BJP if we stand together and resist’: Rahul Gandhi at INDIA bloc meeting

“We have to go into the mode of resistance. Resistance is CBSE. Resistance is NEET. Resistance is going to Great Nicobar. Resistance is the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Rahul Gandhi said. At the INDIA bloc meeting held in New Delhi on June 8, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the importance of unity among alliance partners and urged them to believe in their ability to defeat the BJP. He asserted that, state after state and election after election, the BJP would eventually be defeated, regardless of whether the contests were conducted fairly or marred by irregularities. “Let me tell you, it is easy to beat them if we stand together and resist,” he said. The meeting was boycotted by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which had earlier indicated that it could no longer continue as part of the INDIA bloc following the Congress party’s decision to exit the alliance in Tamil Nadu. Urging opposition parties to avoid internal conflicts and present a united front, he argued that the challenge extended beyond winning elections to safeguarding the integrity of democratic processes. According to him, public discontent with the government was already widespread, but concerns remained about the fairness of future electoral contests. Rahul Gandhi said the BJP will not last, because, in his view, it had undermined democratic institutions and compromised the future of the Indian people. He dismissed claims that opposition parties lack coordination, describing them as a narrative promoted by the BJP. He expressed confidence that alliance partners, including the DMK, would stand united when it came to defending the idea of India. While acknowledging political differences among opposition parties and ongoing regional rivalries, he argued that such disagreements should not overshadow broader common objectives. Gandhi urged opposition leaders to remain flexible and united, contending that there was a concerted effort to portray the opposition as weak and divided. “We are fundamentally opposed to the vision of the RSS. We will die — we will die in the Congress Party — before we stand with or compromise with the BJP or the RSS. You will have to cut off our heads to make it happen. I know lakhs and lakhs of Congress workers in this country who will say: cut off our heads, we will not bow before the RSS.” Rahul Gandhi argued that democratic institutions were increasingly being brought under the influence of the BJP and the RSS, making conventional political engagement less effective. Drawing a parallel with the Congress party’s transformation during the freedom movement, he said the party must now see itself not merely as a political organisation but as a resistance movement. He maintained that resistance, rather than institutional mechanisms, would be the most effective response to perceived injustice and democratic erosion. Citing his experience during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi said sustained public mobilisation could bring about change even without the support of traditional political structures. Referring to issues such as education policy, competitive examinations, environmental concerns, and mass outreach campaigns, Gandhi described resistance as a broad-based civic and political effort. He concluded by pledging to endure criticism and personal setbacks in the interest of strengthening opposition unity, describing the cause as a moral and deeply personal commitment rather than a purely political one. “We have to go into the mode of resistance. Resistance is CBSE. Resistance is NEET. Resistance is going to Great Nicobar. Resistance is the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he said. RS row part of BJP’s one-party rule plan akin to N Korea: CM

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday accused the BJP of trying to turn India into an “absolute one-party system” on the lines of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and alleged that the controversy over AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan’s rejected Rajya Sabha nomination was part of that larger political design. Speaking to mediapersons in Delhi after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Revanth alleged that the BJP had moved beyond ‘stealing votes’ and was now attempting to ‘steal seats’ by misusing institutions. “The saffron party’s decision to field a third candidate despite lacking the necessary numbers exposed their conspiracy. After being successful in snatching Meenakshi’s seat, BJP and BRS indulged in an aggressive campaign by alleging that there were coverts in the Congress. This ploy was only to divert attention from the BJP’s illegal actions,” Revanth alleged. Defending Meenakshi over the private complaint that led to the rejection of her nomination papers by the returning officer in Madhya Pradesh, Revanth said she had no role in resolving disputes between individuals. “Meenakshi does not have the authority to resolve a dispute between two persons. When a private complaint is filed in the court, the court issues summons as part of the procedure. Nomination only requires the details of criminal cases to be included but there is no time limit for the notices to be included. Even notices could have been issued on PM Modi but all such notices may not have been mentioned in his election affidavit,” he explained. He alleged that the returning officer had acted in a partisan manner. “The Election Commission returning officer acted like a BJP party worker and took a decision benefiting the BJP. As per the Supreme Court’s instructions, we will file an election petition,” he said. While Revanth maintained that cabinet expansion did not figure in his discussions with Rahul Gandhi, sources said the issue came up briefly and could be taken up later this month. “The present cabinet is good. All the MLAs of the Congress are eligible for a ministerial berth. Anyone can meet Rahul Gandhi,” he said. Sources said Revanth also briefed Rahul Gandhi on the Meenakshi complaint, political situation in Telangana, Congress govt’s performance over the past two-and-a-half years and its roadmap for the remainder of the term. Responding to questions on Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister and Jana Sena president Pawan Kalyan, Revanth said that permission had not been denied to him for political reasons. “Pawan Kalyan is free like everyone to come and go and contest elections in Telangana. Why would that be a problem to us? Our ministers responded because he had allegedly spoken against the sentiments of Telangana,” he said. The chief minister also sought to downplay the significance of his recent interaction with Modi. “It was PM Modi who hugged me. I did not initiate it. Nothing more should be seen into it. When Centre and states work in coordination, then only states and the country will develop. I requested him to cooperate in the pending projects in the state and sought approvals and central funding for projects,” he said. Revanth accused the Centre of discriminating against Telangana and said Union minister G Kishan Reddy was blocking approvals and funds meant for the state. “There are internal differences among the Telangana BJP MPs. If the eight BJP MPs from Telangana threaten to resign, the Centre will approve projects and release funds to the state,” he said. On inter-state projects, Revanth said Telangana required around 2,000 acres in Maharashtra for the proposed Tummidihatti barrage under the Pranahita-Chevella project and that his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis had agreed to discuss the issue in July. ‘I never said Hitler was my role model’ CM Revanth said his remarks invoking Hitler at a meet had been distorted. “Why would anyone living in a democracy ever claim Hitler as their role model? My comments were distorted. I had taken the name of Hitler only to clarify that HYDRAA is going after land sharks and protecting water bodies in Telangana, and that there was reportedly one HYDRA during Hitler’s regime too,” he said. ‘To stake claim as real TMC’: Rebel MPs to meet Lok Sabha Speaker on Monday

NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress crisis deepened on Friday as dissident MPs prepared to approach Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition as the party’s “real TMC” parliamentary group. According to PTI, rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said the dissident faction had already submitted a representation to the Speaker and would formally stake its claim next week. “We have submitted the letter… On Monday, we will go to the Speaker and stake our claim to form the real TMC parliamentary group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim,” Basunia told PTI Videos. The Cooch Behar MP, who is among lawmakers seeking to support the NDA in the Lok Sabha, claimed that 19 MPs had signed the representation. He said the process of collecting signatures began on June 8. Sources cited by PTI said the timing of the proposed meeting with the Speaker had not yet been finalised. Basunia also rejected allegations by TMC MP Kirti Azad that lawmakers were being induced to switch sides. “Kirti Azad is a liar. This is not right to say. We are 19 MPs and he is also an MP… it is not right to make such allegations,” he said. Meanwhile, Azad accused the BJP of attempting to engineer defections through “Operation Lotus”. In a post on X, he cited the resignation of Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik, meetings involving dissident MPs and BJP leaders, and recent political outreach efforts as evidence of “an organised attempt” to weaken the party. “Operation Lotus under the guidance of (Home Minister) Amit Shah is underway,” Azad said, while claiming that the effort had failed so far. The crisis follows TMC’s defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections and has since spread to Parliament. On Thursday, Prakash Chik Baraik became the third TMC parliamentarian this week to resign from both the party and the Rajya Sabha, after Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev. More trouble for Mamata Banerjee? FIR registered against ex-Bengal CM over alleged inflammatory speech

NEW DELHI: An FIR has been registered against former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee over a speech she allegedly delivered at a rally in Kolkata earlier this year. According to news agency ANI, police sources said the FIR was registered on June 7 at 3.45 pm and has been lodged under Sections 196(1), 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the complaint filed by Tushar Kanti Das, Banerjee’s speech at the Dharna Mancha near Metro Channel in Esplanade (Dharmatala) on March 9 allegedly contained misleading remarks aimed at provoking a breach of peace, disturbing public tranquillity and affecting communal harmony. The complainant also alleged that the speech posed a threat to the state’s democratic framework. Police said the investigation is currently at a preliminary stage. A senior officer quoted by ANI said that authorities have received the complaint and registered the case in accordance with legal procedure. “We have received the complaint, and a case has been registered in accordance with legal procedure. All aspects of the speech and the context in which it was delivered are being thoroughly examined,” the officer said. TMC terms case politically motivated The FIR has added to the political tensions in West Bengal following the recent assembly election results. Opposition parties have welcomed the registration of the case, describing it as necessary to uphold the rule of law and electoral standards. The TMC, however, has termed the FIR “politically motivated” and alleged that it is part of continued attempts to target the party leadership. The complaint comes at a time when the TMC is facing a major internal crisis. The party has been grappling with a rebellion by a section of its MPs following its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. TMC faces growing internal dissent Purported signatures of 19 TMC MPs recently surfaced on a communication to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition of a separate parliamentary bloc under Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and extending support to the BJP-led NDA. The authenticity of the signatures could not be independently verified. However, sources in the dissident camp claimed that the lawmakers had informed the Speaker about forming a separate parliamentary group while retaining a distinct political identity. The developments followed an earlier revolt within the state assembly, where 58 of the TMC’s 80 MLAs reportedly backed expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition instead of the party’s official nominee. In response to the crisis, Mamata Banerjee had dissolved all party committees and announced a revamped organisational structure on June 5. With the police probe into the FIR now underway and internal dissent continuing to challenge the party leadership, the political spotlight remains firmly on Banerjee and the future direction of the TMC. After railway bridge theft, 132-ft mobile tower goes missing in Bihar

The bizarre incident was reported from Buxar district, where a 132-ft telecom tower and a 15 KVA generator allegedly disappeared from their location. PATNA: After an old railway bridge, a 132-foot-tall mobile tower has allegedly been stolen in Bihar. The bizarre incident was reported from Buxar district, where a 132-ft telecom tower and a 15 KVA generator allegedly disappeared from their location. The incident occurred in Dumraon and came to light when officials and employees of GTL Infrastructure reached the site to repair the mobile tower, which had reportedly remained non-operational for years. Residents were surprised to learn that the huge telecom tower, located in the middle of a residential area, had vanished without anyone noticing. Upon arriving at the location, they were shocked to find that the 132-ft tower was no longer there. Along with the tower, a 15 KVA generator set and other technical equipment installed at the site were also found missing. Following the discovery, a company representative submitted a written complaint at the Dumraon police station, alleging theft of the tower and associated equipment. Police have since launched an investigation into the matter. Shubham Arya, SP, Buxar, said a complaint had been received regarding the removal of the tower. “Information about the incident has been received. The matter is being investigated following receipt of the complaint,” he added. The SP said the landowner and other concerned persons would be questioned. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The landowner, Harenath Yadav, said the company had signed an agreement around 10 years ago. In 2022, the agreement expired and the company also stopped making payments for the land used to install the tower. “We gave four notices to the company, but there was no response from that side. Now, we have come to know that the tower is missing,” he told the media. Local residents told police that the tower was installed in the area around 15 years ago. “But it was non-operational for several years. Now we have come to know that the tower is missing,” said local resident Vikas Kumar Singh. Earlier, a major portion of an abandoned iron railway bridge over the Sone river was stolen from Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas district. A 60-foot-long, 500-tonne iron bridge, built during the British era, was stolen by thieves posing as government officials in 2022. A similar incident occurred in Samastipur district in February 2023, when unidentified thieves allegedly made away with a 2-km-long railway track and its scrap. Though FIRs were registered in both cases, nothing substantial emerged from the police investigations. Trump claims ‘Iranian attack’ on Indian ships near Hormuz; disputes Tehran’s version of proposed ceasefire deal

President Donald Trump in a Truth Social post on Friday stated that the terms Iranians have officially stated as part of a proposed ceasefire deal is not what was agreed to by the US. US President Donald Trump on Friday blamed Iran for attacks on Indian ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, calling it “totally unacceptable.” “…their (Iran’s) totally rebuffed Drone attack last night against Indian Ships leaving the Hormuz Strait is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. Trump’s statement came after New Delhi summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks for the second time on Friday to register a strong protest over recent attacks on vessels near the Hormuz, which killed three Indian seafarers. India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday confirmed that the attacks on the three vessels in the past days came from the US Navy stationed near the strait. The US Navy in earlier statements acknowleged the attacks and blamed the vessels of breaching a naval blockade and attempting to transport oil from Iran. Iran earlier in the day condemned the US attacks on ships carrying Indian crew, saying such actions “threaten global peace and security.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei urged the international community to hold the US accountable, adding that its conduct “continues to threaten global peace and security while endangering the freedom of navigation.” Meanwhile, a day after claiming that key discussion points in a proposed ceasefire deal between US and Iran has been approved by Tehran’s “highest level” leadership, Trump in his post stated that the terms Iranians have officially stated as part of the agreement is not what was agreed to. “The terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have NOTHING to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing. What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth,” he wrote. Calling the Iranian leadership “very dishonorable people to deal with,” Trump said, “With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith.” “They better get their act together, and FAST!,” he added. Hours after threatening “very hard” strikes on Iran and a takeover of its oil facilities, Trump on Thursday said he was camncelling the attacks as the Iranian leadership had agreed to key discussion points in a proposed ceasefire deal. Speaking to reporters later on Thursday, Trump said he has “ended the war with Iran.” “I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today (Thursday), and they have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon, something that we insisted on. That was the whole purpose,” Trump said.
