Caste killing in Telangana: Kin murder woman constable for marrying Dalit man
Her husband accused Nagamani’s brother of murder, noting his threats against the couple since their marriage, just weeks earlier.
Constable Nagamani was murdered by her brother for marrying outside her caste
Kongara Nagamani (27), a police constable at the Hayathnagar Police Station in Hyderabad, was allegedly murdered by her kin on Monday, 2 December, allegedly owing to her marriage with a person from a different caste in Ranagareddy district in Telangana.
The 2020 batch graduate — a resident of Raipole in the city — had recently married the man of her choice, who belonged to a different caste, despite opposition from her family.
Rammed by a car from behind while she was heading to work and then stabbed in the neck, her death is a grim reminder of the state of society’s depravity.
Stab wounds in the jaw and neck
Nagamani’s husband, Bandari Srikanth’s complaint to the Ibrahimpatnam police
“We both left for work as usual, and I was talking to her on the way,” Bandari Srikanth, her husband, stated in the complaint.
“She told me that Paramesh was trying to kill her with a car. Then the call disconnected suddenly,” he continued. Paramesh is Nagamani’s younger brother.
“Worried, I sent my brother to the scene who informed me that Nagamani was dead. I arrived at the scene to find my wife lying in a pool of blood,” he described further.
He accused Paramesh of Nagamani’s murder, noting his threats against the couple since their marriage, just weeks earlier.
At the crime scene, the police observed that Nagamani’s scooter was rammed from the back by a car. She had multiple stab wounds on her jaw and neck. Additionally, the car’s number plate had fallen off on the scene.
Speaking to the media, Ibrahimpatnam Police Inspector B Satyanarayana said: “She came here (Raipole) as it was a holiday yesterday and she was killed this morning.”
“We suspect that it is a family-related murder and will complete the investigation after we catch her,” he added.
Intercaste marriage and familial opposition
In the complaint, Srikanth described the couple’s journey to this point. While Nagamani belonged to the Kuruma community (belonging to the Backwards Class), Srikanth belonged to the Mala Community (a Scheduled Caste).
About a decade back, Nagamani was forced into a marriage. Soon after, disliking her husband, Nagamani returned to live with her parents in Raipole. She then met Srikanth and the duo had been in a relationship for about eight years.
Despite much opposition from Nagamani’s family owing to the caste differences, the couple married on 19 November. Paramesh had been threatening the couple since then.
Likely to nab the culprit soon
Ending the complaint, Srikanth demanded quick action against Paramesh. He called upon the police to serve justice to his wife, Nagamani.
The Ibrahimpatnam police informed South First that Srikanth did indeed file a complaint.
“We are proceeding quickly in the case. While we are still searching for Paramesh, we have some solid leads regarding his locations,” the police informed.
They added that they are likely to remand him by Tuesday and that they hope to take custody of Paramesh.
