Caste Violence in Tamil Nadu: Another shocking case of caste discrimination has come to light in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday (12 February), a 20-year-old Dalit college student was attacked by three people because he was riding a bike. The student suffered serious injuries in this attack, after which he was admitted to the hospital.
The victim Ayyasamy, who is a resident of the area near Manamadurai and a third year maths student at Raja Duraisingam Government College of Arts and Science. According to the information, Ayyasamy was returning home on his bike at around 6 pm when three people stopped him on the way and started questioning him about riding a bike. When the matter escalated, they got into an argument after which one of the accused attacked Ayyasamy with a sharp weapon.
Mother rushed injured son to hospital
After the attack, injured Ayyasamy somehow managed to save his life and ran home. His mother rushed him to the hospital. After primary treatment, he was taken to Sivaganga Government Medical College through 108 ambulance service. Later, doctors referred him to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital.
Police arrested all three accused
After this attack, Manamadurai SIPCOT police have arrested all three accused. A case has been registered against them under attempt to murder and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Initial investigation by the police has revealed that this attack was motivated by caste discrimination.
Condemning the incident, the executive director and lawyer of Madurai-based People’s Watch said that the Tamil Nadu government has so far failed to stop such violence. He warned that such frequent attacks can create unrest in the society. He further said that the government should take concrete steps to root out such violence.
