Call for more writing on transgender community
MADURAI: A ‘Transgender Literary Awards – 2019’ was held in the city on Saturday to honour the writers, who have written about the community and to urge more such literary works from others. It was organized by Madurai-based Transgender Resource Centre and ‘Tamil Nadu Murpokku Kalai Ilakkiya Medai’.
Several transgender activists, Tamil poets and writers participated in the event. Organizers said that the event was organized considering that the transgender community in the state do not get adequate representation in the Tamil literature. Recommended By Colombia Speaking at the programme, Solu , a transgender activist and physiotherapist, said that while Tamil literature has over the years spoken about a plethora of topics and communities, the representation of the transgender community has been far and few. “For the scenario of the transgender community to get better, it is of utmost importance that we have enough literary works in our own mother tongue,” she said. Solu also said that while there are exclusive literary works for men, women and children, transgender community hardly has any for them and that it was a must to come up with a genre ‘trans literature’. Personalities from the transgender community also touched upon Kollywood films and how, it has through the years, been portraying them in “demeaning or stereotyped manner”. Among those who were awarded the transgender literary awards were theatre personality A Mangai and writers A Revathi and V Muneesh for their art and literary works on the community
