Barber draws flak for refusing to serve dalits, leaves village
Tirupur: Days after a peace committee meeting led by Kangeyam tahsildar and deputy superintendent of police warned Krishnan (name changed), the only barber at Thayampalayam — for allegedly discriminating against the dalits in the village — the man has left the place for good.
Krishnan informed police that he was leaving for Kethelrev near Kundadam, his native place, a police officer said. “He had vacated the barber shop at Thayampalayam a few days ago,” the officer told TOI.
The Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front had raised the issue after some Arunthathiyars complained that Krishnan was refusing to serve dalits and was serving only the dominant castes in the locality. It was a custom allegedly for many decades in the village.
However, many Arunthathiyars were hesitant to speak about the issue as they feared their livelihood would be affected.
