Attack on dalit youths: SC/ST commission visits duo in hospital
Erode: The Tamil Nadu State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission met the two dalit youths, who were beaten up by gounders two weeks ago, at the government hospital at Gobichettipalayam here on Saturday and held an inquiry with them. The commission is expected to submit a detailed report to the government soon for further action.
The dalit youths were thrashed by 20 gounders at a village near Gobichettipalayam when the duo allegedly sought them to provide water.
According to an official source, the TN SC/ST commission chairman justice P R Sivakumar, vice-chairman Punitha Pandian and members Elanchezhiyan and Reka Priyadharshini interacted with the duo at the hospital on the day. They were accompanied by district collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, superintendent of police Jawahar and other officials. “The youths have shown the injuries to the commission.”
Vadivelraman, founder president, Samooga Needhi Makkal Katchi, told the commission that police had delayed registering cases under the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act after receiving complaints from the victims.
“Police haven’t arrested the accused in the case,” he said and urged the commission to take appropriate action and put pressure on police to arrest the accused.
