Assault on woman employee: SC, ST members come out in support
Ludhiana: A day after the alleged assault on a woman employee of Municipal Corporation, allegedly by a local BJP worker, cops failed to trace the local leader, even as members of several SC/ST welfare organizations came out in support of the woman on Saturday.
Police conducted raids at several places to nab the local BJP leader Mohit Chauhan against whom a case was registered for allegedly assaulting the woman employee of the computer section, deployed at the death and birth certificate branch, but
could not find him. ASI Kulwant Chand, in-charge of Kocchar market police station — who is probing the case — however, said the accused was on the run, and all efforts were being made to trace him.
Meanwhile, several SC/ST welfare organizations have hit out at at BJP’s Ludhiana unit general secretary Rajneesh Dhiman for defending Chauhan and ‘dubbing’ the incident and subsequent FIR against him as a ‘political conspiracy’. “The woman who raised her voice against the unprecedented assault on her by the so-called BJP leader is neither from the Congress nor from any other political party. So, how can BJP claim the FIR to be a political conspiracy. By giving such foolish statements, BJP leaders are justifying an inhuman act done by their shameful leader Chauhan,” said Shiv Soni, advisor to Bharatiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj.
He also regretted that on the one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been stressing on ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, and on the other hand, BJP party workers and leaders were showing scant regard to women. “The local BJP leaders seem to have forgotten that the innocent girl who was beaten up mercilessly is a daughter, that too of a Dalit,” he said.
Dhiman, however, claimed it was wrong to give the issue a caste twist. “Whether one is daughter of a Dalit brother or anyone
else, BJP does not approve of any injustice or violence against women. As per my information given to me by an eye-witness in this case, our worker Mohit Chauhan had gone to the MC office to get pending work done of the people of his area. But the girl misbehaved with him, and even slapped him. However, Mohit did not retaliate, and since both of them belong to the same caste, efforts were made to sort out the issue amicably. A case was registered after no compromise could be reached,” said Dhiman.
