Arrest accused in double murder case, demand protesting Dalits
The joint action committee, seeking justice for the family of two Dalits, a young man and a woman of Jawahrewala village, allegedly shot dead by some Congressmen over political enmity started during the panchayat elections, today gheraoed the SSP office by blocking the Muktsar-Bathinda road here.
A large number of people, belonging to various organisations, are lodging indefinite protest in this regard. They were earlier sitting outside the local DSP office on the Kotkapura road, but due to waterlogging there, they began the protest opposite the District Administrative Complex (DAC) today.
Meanwhile, three members of the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission — Raj Singh, Karanveer Singh Indora and Raj Kumar Hans — today met the protesters and family members of the deceased, ordered a magisterial probe to the local SDM and asked him to submit the report on July 23. Besides, the commission asked the police to arrest all accused before July 23.
The commission also announced to give compensation of Rs 16.5 lakh to the family of deceased.
Meanwhile, the kin of the deceased submitted five audio recordings, wherein some people had threatened them of dire consequences. On this, the commission directed the police to provide security to the family. The commission members also asked the police to cancel the arms licences of all accused.
Manga Azad, convener, Joint Action Committee, said, “Our protest will continue until all accused are put behind bars. They belong to upper castes and publicly killed a Dalit man and a woman. Further, due to their money power, they are still moving freely.”
Kirandeep Singh and his sister-in-law Mini Rani were allegedly shot dead by some Congressmen over the dispute of a street construction under the MGNREGA in the village on Saturday.
The police had then booked 11 people, including Palwinder Singh Pappa, Sukhwinder Singh ‘Duggi’, Prabhjot Singh (president of the Youth Congress, Muktsar block) and others. At present, five accused – Pappa, Duggi, Sandeep Singh, Hardam, Bindu – have been arrested and Sandeep has been detained in a hospital.
