Ahmedabad: Dalit woman’s kin refuse to take body till culprits are held

AHMEDABAD: A day after the body of a 26-year-old Dalit woman was found from a secluded place near Basna village of Visnagar taluka of Mehsana, her family members protested at the Civil Hospital in Asarwa where the corpse was kept for the forensic postmortem.According to the deceased’s family members, she was the sole bread-winner of the family as her father was suffering from mental illness and her two siblings — a brother and a sister — were younger to her.
Her uncle, who stays in Bavla, said that they will not accept the body until the killer is caught.
“She had been missing since Tuesday evening and we tried to search for her, but couldn’t succeed. Even cops could not find her. Ultimately, her disrobed body was found from a farm in Basna village,” said her uncle.
He said that this is not just an issue of her niece, but it is the issue of the women’s safety in Gujarat.
“We are sitting here at the Civil Hospital in the hope for getting justice. We will wait for a concrete action by the police,” he said.
The Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani met the family members of the woman.
“We have three demands in the case. First, the accused must be arrested at earliest. A special court must be constituted for the trial of the case, and the victim’s family must be given three acres of land to earn their livelihood,” said Mevani.
He said that the woman had been missing since Tuesday evening and only after her body was found, senior officers of Mehsana police were roped in the probe. “Had they taken actions earlier, the woman would have been alive,” said Mevani.
