Ahmedabad: Caste outfit tries to kill father of man who wed Patel girl
AHMEDABAD: A 66-year-old resident of Kalol on Wednesday filed a complaint for attempted murder against five members of a Patidar organization, who had severely assaulted him on Tuesday, ostensibly because his son married a Patidar woman in December 2018.
According to the FIR filed at Kalol taluka police station by Jayanti Nayak, a resident of Prayag Avenue Flats in Kalol, he was beaten by five members of Lalji Patel’s Sardar Patel Group (SPG). The accused were Dharmesh Patel, Harsh Patel, Mitu Patel, Sudhir Patel and Mihir Patel.
Nayak said his son Ashish married Ipti, a woman from the Patidar community, on December 3, 2018 after a long relationship. As Ipti’s family and members of SPG were threatening Nayak and his family, he had filed a complaint for criminal intimidation against four members of SPG including Mihir and Harsh and two others, named Vishnu Patel and Bhikha Patel.
On January 18, an SPG activist from Gandhingar, Dharmesh Patel, threatened Nayak, telling him to withdraw his complaint and hand over Ipti to her family. Dharmesh gave them an ultimatum, saying he would kill him and his family members if Ipti did not return to her family in 10 days.
On Tuesday, when Nayak was returning from his workplace in Kalol, the five SPG members attacked him with iron rods, sticks and pipes. They kept saying Nayak should be killed as his son married a Patel woman. When Nayak cried for help, some locals gathered around and rescued him. He was later admitted to a private hospital, after which he filed the FIR.
