After official assurance, Dalit youth cremated
Karnal, After assurance by ADC Anish Yadav, the family members of Dalit youth Kapil (24), a resident of Gonder village who had succumbed to his injuries on Friday, cremated the body late on Sunday evening. Earlier, hundreds of members of the Dalit community and family members of Kapil had continued their protest on the second day today.
They had refused to cremate the body till the fulfilment of their demands, including stringent action against the accused, financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the kin of the deceased and upgrade of the school in their vicinity to senior secondary level.
They had also demanded a police post in the village, which the officials had accepted on Saturday. The protesters have now ended their protest.
Kapil, who belonged to the Dalit community, was attacked by some youths of the village on November 24 that led to his death in PGI on Friday. The attack on Kapil by upper caste youths was the result of altercations between two groups for the past several days.
His family and Dalit community members on Saturday blocked the Karnal-Nissing state highway outside Nissing police station till late at night.
After assurance from SP Surinder Singh Bhoria, they lifted the blockade. On Sunday, they started their protest in Gonder village by placing the body in Harijan chaupal. One of the protesters said that the government should give financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the family members of Kapil, besides setting up a police post in the village to ensure their safety.
He said that the family members should be given arms licence for their self-protection. Another protester said that the primary school in their vicinity should be upgraded to senior secondary level as they are afraid to go to the school in the vicinity of the upper caste community area.
On the other hand, the police claimed to have arrested six of the accused and took five of them on police remand to ascertain the whereabouts of the remaining accused.
The ADC assured the protesters to send their case to the government for compensation through the CM relief find and also under the provision of SC/ST Act.
Anish Yadav confirmed the cremation of Kapil and said that they have provided a copy of the FIR to the family members. The case for CM relief find will be sent to the government on Monday.
