After being refused, Dalits in Karnataka now served sweets in hotels
From a bar entry Koppal: Following the intervention of the Koppal district administration following an untouchability incident, in a welcome move, villagers came together and fed sweets to the Dalit youth and also accompanied them to a temple.
The case came to light in Koppal’s Halavarthy village, where a Dalit youth was allegedly refused a haircut at a local salon. A hotel owner had also allegedly refused to serve breakfast to a group of Dalit youth from the village. Following the incident, which was reported a week ago, Dalit families protested in front of the gram panchayat office.
The administration had to send a team of senior officials and a peace meeting was held on Thursday. Under this, the villagers have taken an oath before senior administrative officials and promised not to practice untouchability in the village. After the meeting, the Dalit youth were offered sweets and snacks at the same hotel where they were denied entry a few days earlier.
“Some cases of untouchability have been reported in rural parts of Koppal. Whenever such incidents are reported, the district administration organizes peace meetings before proceeding with any police action. In the Halavarthy village case, both the hotel owner and the salon owner have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and have been arrested, a senior official said.
