Villagers seek civic facilities

Seeking better civic facilities, a group of about 50 villagers from Sumathipuram near Melur submitted a petition to the Collector at the grievance day meeting here on Monday.

G. Murugan, who led the villagers, said their hamlet with a majority of Dalits, was bereft of water, school, anganwadi centre and road. Though officials claimed that funds were allotted to Semmanipatti panchayat, it was never used either for their welfare.“Every year since 1996, officials attending gram panchayat meetings assure us of getting road and other civic amenities but they never keep the word,” he said.

About 90 families lived in Sumathipuram with a population of 500, who were mostly farm workers. Some of them sent their wards to Muthusamipatti for primary education. But not many send their children to school at all, he said and added that they faced caste-related issues too.

The petitioners also prayed to the Collector to provide potable water and bus facility to Melur and Mattuthavani.
