TRICHY: M Sneha on Friday became the first transgender to be appointed a driver for the district supply and marketing society (DSMS) under the Tamil Nadu livelihood mission (TNLM), in Trichy.
Sneha, 37, a resident of Fathima Nagar in Sangiliyandapuramin Trichy, was seen driving a Mahindra jeep on the first day of her job at the society at Trichy collector’s office on Friday.
District collector K Rajamani issued the appointment for the provisional job on Thursday. “Ever since I switched to sari, I was denied the job of a driver at many places. They rejected my application saying that people like me won’t stay in one place for long. I was feeling dejected but the effort of our leader Sonali got me a satisfactory job,” Sneha told TOI on Friday.
“I started off my career as a driver for small goods carriers in Trichy followed by driver for a headmaster, politician and several others,” said Sneha. Interestingly, she used to wear only male garments then. Recently, the TNLM considered Sneha for the post of driver at the DSMS which is a platform to market products of women self-help group (SHG) in the district.
