Meira Kumar, former Lok Sabha Speaker, has underlined the need to fight caste system still prevailing in the country. Speaking at a State-level convention of Mochis, organised by the Mochi Mahasabha here on Sunday, Ms. Kumar said that the continuing caste system in the country has resulted in the poor remaining poor even today. “Our country is blessed with natural resources. With caste system still in vogue, the country has remained backward,” she bemoaned. The caste system had ushered in slavery, which was unfortunate, she regretted.
“Dalits have been, for ages, serving society and, in turn, have seen only insult. They have been discharging their specific duties in temples as if it has been reserved for them. People, who have not questioned this, are questioning reservation being extended to Dalits,” she said.
She also sought to know from people who love leather products how they can ignore those who produce such products. The leather industry has been contributing greatly to the country’s economy, she said.
