Mutilated body of teen Dalit girl found near Meerut, rape suspected

Meerut: The mutilated body of a teenaged Dalit girl, with her throat slit, was found from a field in a Hapur village, around 20 km from Meerut, late on Thursday evening. The girl, a student of Class 9, had gone missing on Thursday afternoon. Frantic search by her family ended with her body being found in the field near their house.

While the local police, which suspects that the victim was raped before being killed, has sent the body for postmortem, the incident has enraged the villagers, who staged protest in front of Dhaulana police station in Hapur on Thursday, blocking NH-24.
“A case under IPC Section 302 (murder) has been registered at Dhaulana police station. Charges of rape would be added once the postmortem report is out,” said an official.
According to the victim’s family, their daughter left the house in the afternoon to fetch cattle feed, but did not return. “We have rounded up a few suspects from the village, all teenagers, in connection to the matter. We will soon work out the case,” Hemant Kutiyal, Hapur superintendent of police, said.

Meanwhile, locals were angry after the incident. They held protest in front of Dhaulana police station, choking NH-24. The agitators cleared the highway only after repeated assurances from senior officials that the case will be worked out soon and the guilty will be punished.
